This Is Lisbon

Lisbon Neighbourhood Guides

Lisbon’s neighbourhoods sit close together but differ sharply in elevation, street pattern and pace. Use these guides to choose a district that suits the time, surfaces and climbing you want.

Read the city by level

Baixa and the Tagus edge form the lower city. Chiado and Bairro Alto sit above them. Alfama and Mouraria climb through older, irregular street patterns, while Belém is a separate western district with broad spaces and longer distances.

Visit respectfully

Historic districts are lived neighbourhoods. Keep residential access clear, ask before photographing people and choose locally authored interpretation when exploring community history.
